Course Highlights

  • Introduction to Marine Ecology: Introduction to marine ecology and how to view the reef scientifically by assessing key biotic and abiotic components on the marine environment.
  • Real-world science: students learn how to use real-world scientific sampling and survey techniques and are certified to conduct their own surveys and report data back to the online database.
  • Continuing Education: Students receiving this certification are welcome to return later and complete the remaining modules to achieve the full EMP certification.

Prerequisites

  • Be a minimum of 12 years old

What Your Day Looks Like

Lecture & Workshop

Start your Sea Turtle Ecology and Monitoring course with an in-depth lecture from your Conservation Instructor and Marine Biologist, Aris. Learn about turtle evolution, migration, and ecological importance. You’ll learn how to identify species based on key features, understand their threats, and explore how data from photo ID helps track individual turtles over time.

Before diving, you’ll learn to use ID photography techniques, estimate turtle sizes, and document behavioral observations. We’ll practice with real datasets and explore how your data contributes to long-term turtle monitoring in the region.

Duration: 1-2 Hours

Dive

Time to dive and find those turtles!

The Gili Islands are a hotspot for turtles, and many know them as the "Turtle Capital of the World." You won't have trouble finding them. However, you might also see threats to these turtles, such as human impacts like fishing lines and irresponsible diving.

As you observe green and hawksbill turtles in their natural environment, you’ll practice ID photography, behavioral tracking, and log data for our ongoing turtle ecology project.
